Senior Legal Counsel provides legal and risk management advice, support and services on a wide variety of legal and regulatory issues to assist business units achieve their objectives while proactively managing the Company’s legal, regulatory, and reputation risk. The incumbent is guided by defined goals and objectives and works under the general supervision and direction of the VP, Legal Services in support of all business units.       



  • Provide sound legal advice and services to the Company with a high degree of professionalism and integrity

  • Support business units by advising on legal and regulatory risks associated with achieving business and Company objectives and collaborate with business units to mitigate such risks in an efficient and practical manner

  • Provide legal advice and support as part of a project team and independently on day to day legal inquiries, complaints and miscellaneous legal matters

  • Manage legal work in a manner that is efficient and cost effective

  • Build relationships across the Company in order to become a trusted legal advisor

  • Provide training on legal and regulatory matters to employees and management, as required

  • Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of complex contracts, marketing material and other forms of legal documentation

  • As a subject matter expert, assist business units with understanding of legal implications and their ability to identify and mitigate legal risks associated with ongoing operations and transactions

  • Provide legal guidance to support the development and modification of practices and procedures to conform to legal, regulatory and Company requirements

  • Keep up-to-date with relevant legislation, case law and regulator requirements in a wide variety of subject areas 

  • Provide leadership support to the department and participate in learning and development opportunities


Skills / Knowledge / Education

  • Called to the Bar in Ontario and/or Quebec and must maintain license to practice law in Ontario and/or Quebec

  • Bilingual (English/French) and able to competently practice law in English and French languages required

  • 8+ years experience providing legal advice and services, preferably as in-house counsel in the Canadian Financial Services Industry

  • Extensive knowledge of a wide variety of laws applicable to the day-to-day operations of a Canadian life and health insurance company

  • Knowledge of insurance and investment products, processes and systems

  • Highly responsive, timely and creates appropriate sense of urgency

  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks and projects

  • Tact, diplomacy and the ability to handle confidential information

  • High attention to detail, work is accurate, complete and organized

  • Ability to think logically, analyze and work collaboratively to solve problems

  • Well-developed communication, negotiation, persuasion and presentation skills

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member

  • Clear writing, listening and verbal communication skills

  • Approaches challenges with curiosity and creativity grounded in pragmatic risk management

  • Digital and data dexterity


Working Conditions

  • Office environment and telecommuting from home office, as required

  • Prolonged periods of concentration and attention to detail

  • Prolonged periods of sitting while using a computer and/or telephone

  • Travel as required
