Group Underwriter

 

Scope Statement

The Group Underwriter provides consulting services to internal and external stakeholders and customers, and reviews and assesses the financial risk on group insurance requests for coverage in our core market of 2 – 99 lives. The Incumbent is guided by defined procedural constraints and works under the general supervision of the Manager, Group Underwriting.

 

Impact Statement

  • Assesses risk, determines suitability of product and services requested and provides solutions on a case by case basis for Requests to Quote, renewals and inforce amendment requests using defined underwriting guidelines and sound judgment and experience to support profitable growth objectives

  • Collaborate and consult with sales team and distribution partners, to resolve risk, product and service opportunities to support profitable growth

  

Responsibilities include

  • Assess the financial risk exposure for group insurance by determining suitability of the group, appropriate coverage levels and establishing rates

  • Use experience and judgment, in conjunction with Underwriting guidelines, product and services knowledge, and knowledge of government regulations, to determine optimal solutions to meet customer needs

  • Review annual renewals and inforce amendment requests to assess risk and  determine appropriate rate and plan adjustments 

  • Make decisions in a timely manner and communicate to the appropriate team members and internal and external stakeholders

  • Participate and/or provide input on projects

 

Knowledge / Experience / Certification

  • 3+ years work experience underwriting group business at a trainee level

  • Knowledge of group benefits products, contractual provisions, risk assessment and pricing methodologies

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software

  • Knowledge of group insurance industry trends

  • Knowledge of the economic and regulatory environment

  • Proven ability to deliver customer focused solutions

  • Knowledge of employee benefit administration systems or CRM systems is an asset

  • Experience providing services to and interacting directly with sales team and distribution partners is an asset

  • Bilingualism (English/French) is required

 

Education / Professional Courses

  • Completion of a university degree with courses in science, economics or finance.

  • GBA Designation
